Dialing Procedures and Directories

University of Maryland, College Park Exchanges (314-XXXX, 405-XXXX, 226-XXXX)

Dial the desired five-digit extension (last five digits of the telephone number).


University 403 Exchange (403-XXXX numbers)

Dial 80. When you hear the continuous tone, dial the last four digits of the telephone number. Or, dial 9, and upon hearing the dial tone, dial the area code and the complete seven-digit number.

University College

Dial 82. When you hear the continuous tone, dial the last four digits of the desired number. Or, dial 9, and upon hearing the dial tone, dial the area code and complete seven-digit number.


UM System

Dial 9. Upon hearing the dial tone, dial the area code and the desired seven-digit number.


MD/DC/VA Local Calls

Dial 9. Upon hearing the dial tone, dial the area code (e.g. 301, 202, or 703) and the desired seven-digit number.


Long Distance Calls

Dial 9. Upon hearing the dial tone, dial 1, then the area code and the desired seven-digit number.


Toll-Free Calls

Dial 9. Upon hearing the dial tone, dial 1 followed by 800, 888, 866 or 877 and the desired number.


International Calls

Dial 9. Upon hearing the dial tone, dial 0 11 followed by the country code, followed by the city code (if applicable), followed by the telephone number.

Collect and Third Number

Dial 9. Upon hearing the dial tone, dial 0 for billed calls. The operator will then assist you with your call. University telephones do not accept collect or third number billed calls. 900 or 976 numbers cannot be reached from university telephones.

  • Campus - Dial 0 or dial 301.405.1000
    There is no charge for this call.
  • Local - Dial 9-411
    Each call to the local operator costs $.40
  • Long Distance - Dial 9-(Area Code)-555-1212
    Each call to the long distance operator costs $.80
  • International Calls
    If you need assistance dial 9 + 0 + 0.
NOTE: AT&T gives procedural assistance and cannot place or connect a long distance campus call without the user having an AT&T calling card.


Calling Card

Dial 9. Upon hearing the dial tone, dial 0, then the desired telephone number. Wait for the prompt, then dial your calling card number.

Verizon Directories: Please contact Campus Information Services at 301.405.1000 or via e-mail (with the subject line Verizon Directories) to obtain copies of the specific directory you need.
