WOW Internet Explorer Issues

Hyperion, the software company for Brio/Hyperion, has identified a change that is needed in your Microsoft Office Internet Explorer settings as a result of recent security patches or hot fixes that were issued by Microsoft.

Symptom # 1:
Blank browser showing “Working…”, or blank browser with a small black square containing a red ‘X’ on the screen and a message bar at the top of the screen will contain this message: "To help protect your security, Internet Explorer blocked this site from downloading files to your computer…”

  1. Make WOW a "trusted site" as follows:
    • Select Tools from the text menu. Select Internet Options. Select Security tab.
    • Click on Trusted Sites icon and then click on Sites button.
    • Uncheck/deselect the “Require server verification (https) for all sites in this zone” checkbox BEFORE typing in the url in the next step.
    • Enter http://wow.umd.edu as a site in the "Add this Web site to the zone" -- please make sure that the address DOES NOT contain "www." in front of "wow.umd.edu"
    • Select Add.
    • Click OK to save your settings, then click OK again to close the Internet Options window
    • Try accessing the report again
    • If this does not resolve the problem, move onto the next step

  2. Have your Local IT Computer Support person reinstall the BrioQuickview plug-in software -- let that person know they MUST be logged into the machine as "ADMINISTRATOR" in order for the software to install correctly -- just being logged on as a user with Administrator privileges is not sufficient. Installation instructions are available at: Alternate Method to Install Brio.Quickview for Internet Explorer Users

  3. After the software has been reinstalled and the computer is still logged on as Administrator, the IT Computer Support person should do the following test:
    • Launch Internet Explorer.
    • Make WOW a trusted website as described above.
    • Have the WOW user log onto WOW and try to access the report. If prompted to install the software, click Begin, then click OK once receiving the successful message box.
    • If the WOW user can successfully access the report while logged on as Administrator, you know the software is working properly.
    • Logout as Administrator and have the user log in with their own username.
    • If the user still cannot access the report successfully, try building a new windows profile for the user, make WOW a trusted website under IE in that new profile.

Symptom # 2:
Text cannot be entered in a text box on the Start page

  1. Press the tab key or space bar to enable the Start page's text cursor and text boxes
  2. If pressing the tab key or space bar does not resolve the problem, have your Local IT Computer Support person log onto the machine as the local Administator and either create a new profile for you to use or remove your existing user profile and have you logon so the profile can be re-created.

If you have any questions about WOW or problems completing this Internet Explorer update, please send email to wowadmin@umd.edu.
