Ellen is the Director for the Academic Support unit in the Office of Information Technology. Academic Support provides leadership in the integration of technology with pedagogy and research to meet the academic mission of the University. We do this by creating and supporting physical and virtual teaching, learning and research environments; by assisting those who use these environments to not only meet their teaching, learning or research goals, but be innovative in the process; and by fostering relationships with key partners, in formal and informal settings. Ellen is responsible for leading Academic Support's efforts in these major areas: Learning Technologies, Instructional Facilities, and Outreach.

The Learning Technologies area provides access to many instructional technologies for faculty and students. Instructional technologists support faculty who use the Teaching Theaters and the Technology Classrooms on campus. Instructional designers are available to work with faculty on how best to integrate technology into the teaching/learning process. An instructional web server, OTAL, was created to address the growing need for cgi-bin programming by students and faculty, as well as the need for other class website space. ELMS (powered by Blackboard Academic Suite) is the OIT supported course management tool for campus. The University is recognized as a WebCT Institute. The Institute for Instructional Technology (IIT) provides faculty with an intensive immersion into new technologies with an emphasis on how those technologies can be used in the teaching/learning process. The Innovations in Teaching and Learning Conference provides a forum in which faculty innovators share their experiences and the tools they have developed in an ongoing effort to integrate technology into their curricula.

The Instructional Facilities area provides support for the Technology Classrooms and the Teaching Theaters on campus. In addition, design services are available for those planning new or renovated technology-enhanced facilities.

The Outreach area provides the link between between centralized, university-wide technology services and unique, discipline-specific needs of faculty, administrators, and others across the university. The Technology Officers serve as a formal link between the university-wide services of OIT and the college or unit. As liaisons, TOs keep the lines of communication open. Through improved communication, OIT receives feedback on existing programs and receives suggestions for new services that may benefit faculty in multiple colleges and offices. At the same time, TOs help faculty and others take advantage of the university's state-of-the-art information technology environment and expertise and services available through OIT.
