An Open, Integrated, and Effective Path for Portfolios, Learning and Assessment

Scholarship 2.0 has developed a wealth of new tools to support learning and effective instruction, but in many cases the availability of these tools has outpaced our ability to sort and assimilate the best ones to achieve educational objectives.  Indiana University is executing a strategy to integrate its learning environment that includes provisioning of course support, student portfolios, connections to digital library resources, and collaboration.  This session will demonstrate and discuss IU's progress and challenges in developing an effective and holistic learning support environment for its 100,000 students.  In particular, the session will show work with student portfolios from the IUPUI gateway courses and its Principles of Undergraduate Learning metrics.

John Merrow
Declining By Degrees

John Merrow is a longtime education correspondent for public television and radio, and head of the non-profit Learning Matters, which produces television, radio, and podcasts on teaching and learning. Merrow’s documentary and book, Declining by Degrees, is an important and provocative report on higher education in the United States.Declining by Degrees is the product of careful investigation and interviews with students and faculty about the expectations brought to higher education and the experiences of undergraduate students, instructors, and administrators. It surveys much about learning, teaching, and living at the contemporary university, including the relationship between learning and professional training (and, of course, graduates’ salaries), the challenges of attending college while working, the connections between secondary and higher education, the varying approaches of large and small institutions, and the perspectives of faculty for whom teaching seems undervalued.

Deschool, Reboot, Real School [pdf]

In Deschooling Society, Ivan Illich describes the pupil who is " 'schooled' to confuse teaching with learning, grade advancement with education, a diploma with competence, and fluency with the ability to say something new." Illich goes on to state that "a deschooled society implies a new approach to incidental or informal education...." Canhigher education find or invent such a new approach? How can incidental or informal learning be assessed, and by whom? What roles might information technologies play in a deschooled society? Dr. Campbell will explore these questions, as well as the larger question of what a "real school" might look like in the context of Illich's critique.
