TT Course Proposals
Call
for Proposals for Spring 2004 for Use of the Teaching Theaters
The Academic
Support group of the Office of Information Technology is announcing a call
for proposals for use of the Teaching Theaters for the Summer and Fall
2003 terms.
Proposals for
the Spring 2004 term are due by
MIDNIGHT
on MAY 1, 2003.
The selection
of classes to be taught in the rooms for full semesters is made by the
a sub-committee of the Teaching and Learning Advisory Committee of Academic
Support of the Office of Information Technology. This committee is composed
of representatives from many colleges and centers on Campus. The Committee
also encourages those faculty who are interested in utilizing the Teaching
Theaters for part of their course (such as one class meeting time a week
instead of all class meeting times each week) to submit a proposal. Those
requesting a small number of sessions such as three to four times during
a semester are also encouraged to apply.
Submission
of proposals is handled electronically.
Please read
the information below about what should be contained in your proposal before
proceeding.
If
you are interested in scheduling your class in the Teaching Theaters in
the a term other than than the one in the CFP, please refer to the guidelines
on scheduling the Teaching Theaters and submit a proposal indicating the
appropriate term.
Proposal
Process Information
Proposals should
contain the following information:
1.The name,
course number, meeting time requirements, semester(s) involved, and approximate
size of the class. If this is not for an entire semester, for what period
of time. Please indicate how flexible you can be in meeting times.
2.A description
of the class, how you anticipate using the technology, and your expected
benefits for using a Teaching Theater that could not be achieved in another
room.
Note: It is
important to address how you will take advantage of the capabilities of
the room. If you have any questions about the capability of the Teaching
Theater, please contact Chris Higgins at (301) 405-5190 to discuss possible
situations and methods that could be used in your class.
3.Any special
needs you anticipate (software, support, external resources, etc.).
4.Your campus
address, phone number, and E-mail address.
5.Some courses
each semester are cut by departments due to funding. We are requesting
that you have your department email Chris Higgins (chiggins@umd.edu)
with a statement that the course will not be cut for lack of funding if
it is scheduled for a Teaching Theater. Lack of enrollment during registration
is not covered by this commitment.

Submission Process
Support
Faculty using
the Teaching Theaters can expect to have an experienced support person
available. A support program exists to assist faculty in preparing to use
the room. Extensive support is provided before and during the semester.
Faculty are expected to take part in orientation meetings and meetings
between the other faculty members using the Teaching Theaters. "Instructor
Prep" sessions will be available weekly during the semester to allow faculty
and their TA(s) to use the room to prepare for the following weeks.
Feedback
As part of our
on-going evaluation of the Teaching Theaters, we expect feedback from the
faculty at the end of the semester. Faculty will be asked to prepare a
one page reflection on their experience in the teaching theater at the
end of the semester which will be submitted to the Steering Committee.
Teaching
Assistants
We strongly
suggest that you have a TA for the course you will be teaching in the Teaching
Theaters. There is an undergraduate TA program available as a resource
for you. If you are interested, please contact Jim Greenberg at 405-3154.
Your Teaching Assistant will be trained in the use of the facility, as
well as, the basic support for the teaching theater.
Research
We want to accommodate
diverse faculty needs and will make every effort, within our budget and
resources, to encourage and support faculty who use the room. We are proud
that the University of Maryland is a leader in this innovative collaborative
technology. We expect to conduct leading edge research in the use of technology
to improve the teaching and learning process.
