April 26 - 27, 2012
University of Maryland, College Park

Sixth Annual ITL Conference
Thursday and Friday, April 26 - 27, 2012

Instructors at the University of Maryland are finding innovative ways to engage, assess and challenge student learners.  Teaching and learning take place in many locations and within the context of a variety of forums.  In traditional classrooms, distanced, blended, collaborative or independent learning environments, students and faculty are exploring a variety of strategies and tools meant to improve the overall academic experience.

The Innovations in Teaching and Learning (ITL) Conference showcases and celebrates the creativity and dedication of University instructors who have demonstrated excellence in their teaching endeavors.   This year's conference, co-hosted by the Division of Information Technology and the Center for Teaching Excellence, features 20 presentations by educators from the University of Maryland College Park, and, for the first time, representatives of several other University Systems institutions.

USM participation is not the only thing that is new to the ITL Conference.  This year, the conference will also feature a half-day pre-conference afternoon of best practice workshops conducted by representatives of Turning Technologies, and Campus Pack Learning Objects, as well as by Friday’s keynote, Jeanne Narum.  These sessions will be capped off by a sponsored reception in the Stamp Student Union.  The conference and pre-conference activities remain free to the University of Maryland community; however, registration is still required.

The conference will also feature two keynote presentations by nationally recognized experts in learning environments. The breakfast keynote, entitled It Begins in Delight and Ends in Wisdom: Awakening the Digital Imagination, will be provided by Gardner Campbell, Director of Professional Development and Innovative Initiatives at Virginia Tech. Jeanne L. Narum, founding Director of Project Kaleidoscope and the PKAL Learning Spaces Collaboratory, will speak on the topic of Learning Spaces are More Than Boxes: How Physical and Virtual Spaces Impact Learning. The presentation will focus on how physical and virtual spaces impact learning.

Registration is now open. Follow or comment on the ITL Conference Twitter Back Channel #ITL_UMD during conference-related activities on April 26 and 27.
