- Building a Virtual Digital
Forensics Lab
The Office of Information Technology Security Office has created a Virtual
Digital Forensics Lab with support from CyberWATCH and funding from the
National Science Foundation. This presentation discussed the technologies
used to create the virtual lab and the challenges faced. It was presented
by OIT's Rob Maxwell.
- An Auditor's
Perspective on Frameworks for Information Systems Security in Higher Education
How do security professionals work with business owners and data stewards
to create an effective framework for information and information system
security that is practical, predictive, and flexible to support all the
functional business needs of an institution of higher education? This
presentation provides an auditor’s perspective and describes different
frameworks and methodologies for applying information and information
system security practices within the open environment of higher education.
It was presented by OIT's Brian Markham and the University System of Georgia's
Erwin “Chris” Carrow.

- Transitioning
Learning Management Systems: Making the Move at the Enterprise Level
Maryland and Delaware have each transitioned to new enterprise learning
management systems. Maryland moved from two separate systems to a single
commercial system, while Delaware moved from one commercial system to
an open source system. This presentation compared their experiences and
provided examples and lessons learned. Ellen Borkowski presented on Maryland's
experience with transitioning to ELMS.
- Growing
and Sustaining Student Response Systems at Large Campuses: Three Stories
Maryland's experience regarding the adoption, implementation, and sustainability
of student response systems (clickers) was presented by Chris Higgins.
The experiences of the University of Pittsburgh and the University of
Delaware are also included.
- Deploying
an Open Source, Online Evaluation System: Multiple Experiences
Cambridge, Maryland, Michigan, and Virginia Tech are collaborating on
an open source, online evaluation system integrated with Sakai. Ellen
Borkowski represented the University of Maryland on this panel, which
described the collaborative development partnership, the features of the
online evaluation system, the institutional framework and approach for
online course evaluations, and the results of pilot studies.

This poster session presentation described the University of Maryland's
experience with the changing role of Data Administration groups in higher
education. The session was presented by Barbara Hope and Erin Howard.
- Audit
Challenges and Best Practices in a Research University Environment
This presentation shows how OIT's past experiences with state audits has led
to a proactive approach to audit compliance. It was presented by Vice President
and CIO Jeffrey Huskamp at the National State Auditors Association's annual
conference in June 2008.
- Student Collaboration via
Wimba Classroom: Extending Group Study Beyond the Physical
The primary focus of the presentation was to share experiences and lessons
learned using Wimba LiveClassrooms as a virtual group study space. Time was
also devoted to the selection and implementation process. It was presented
by Chris Higgins at the Wimba Connect Conference in March 2008. (Read a more

Classification and Privacy: A Foundation for Compliance
This presentation is about data privacy and how implementing a data classification
structure is a foundation for compliance as well as the best way to ensure
that critical data remains private. It was presented by Brian Markham at a
University System of Maryland Workshop on Privacy on February 29, 2008.
