Network Usage

One of Internet2's obvious appeals is its high transmission capacity or bandwidth -- the amount of data that can be transmitted in a fixed amount of time usually expressed in bits per second (bps).

Here are some links that give information on current and historical bandwidth utilization:

  • To see how much traffic is passing from the University of Maryland into the MAX GigaPoP, please go to the UM-MAX Connection.
  • To see how much traffic the MAX GigaPoP is sending into Abilene, please go here.
  • The Abilene NOC Weather Map shows the current network utilization of the Internet2 backbone. Other information on the core nodes is available here.
  • More information on the status of Abilene is available from the Abilene NOC.

Some of these sites use MRTG, a simple Web-based tool that collects and presents data acquired via SNMP.
