Windows Vista Configuration Guide

|

  1. Click Start.

  2. Scroll and select Control Panel.

  3. Locate the Network and Internet category and click once on Connect to the Internet.

  4. Click once on Wireless (Connect using a wireless router or a wireless network.).

  5. Several wireless names appear, please select umd (Unsecured Network) NOTE: The Vista operating system has difficulty connecting to umd-secure so we recommend connecting to umd for a consistent connection. After selecting umd click Connect.

  6. A window will appear informing you that umd is an unsecured network. Click Connect AnywayNOTE: Although, information sent over this network might be visible to others when utilizing online banking, purchasing, etc., most Web sites encrypt your information during the submission of your login information and browsing of their site.

  7. After clicking Connect Anyway, your computer will establish a connection to umd.

  8. Once the connection to umd is complete, a window will appear showing that you are successfully connected to umd. This window also gives you two options in the form of saving this network (umd) for later use, and starting the connection automatically when you start your computer. If you plan on using the umd wireless network on a consistent basis, we recommend saving the network so you do not have to go through the previous steps every time you want to connect. Click Next to enter the testing phase.

  9. A testing window will appear to verify the correct connection settings. This process is 100% automated and you should not have to do anything but wait for completion. NOTE:  Do not hit the Skip button.

  10. After the connection testing is complete, a window will appear stating You are connected to the Internet. Click Browse the Internet now.

  11. After clicking Browse the Internet now, Internet Explorer or a default Web browser should open and the University Of Maryland Login Page should appear. Enter your Directory ID and password and click Login.

  12. You may be prompted with dialog windows asking whether you want your password to be remembered. This is totally up to the individual, but for security reasons we believe passwords should not be saved.

  13. After selecting Yes or No in the password window, the default home page set in your Web browser should appear and you are ready to browse the Web using the wireless network. NOTE: Once you have logged in, your wireless session should last for as long as you are working without an hour of inactivity. If the connection has been inactive for more than one hour, you may have to re-authenticate (opening Web browser and re-entering Directory login information).
