The University of Maryland wireless network enables University of Maryland
faculty, staff, and students to connect to the Internet when away from their
home base. The university's wireless network is one of the largest in the country
with approximately 4,100 access points providing convenient wireless access
in almost all campus buildings, including every academic building and residence
hall as well as the Stamp Student Union and McKeldin and Hornbake Libraries.
Similar to the wireless networks at Villanova,
Yale,
the University
of Washington, and Georgia
State University, the University of Maryland wireless network is intended
as a supplement to, not a substitute for, the wired network. Although our wireless
network is robust, the nature of wireless networking makes for a less stable
connection than wired networking. For this reason, we recommend that you use
your wired network connection when you are in your residence hall room or office.
Additionally, activities such as audio/video streaming and large file transfers
are bandwidth intensive -- attempting them on the wireless network could likely
cause poor performance, as well as adversely impacting the wireless connections
of other users sharing the access point.
For assistance connecting to the wireless network, please contact the OIT
Help Desk.
