Network Service Offerings

Network and Telecommunications Services provides connections to the campus data network through a number of different services.  The following listing summarizes the options and the costs involved. Forms for requesting network services can be obtained on the NTS Forms Page.

Standard Ethernet | Server Connections |Wireless LANs | Off-Campus Office Connections

Standard Ethernet:

The basic campus network offering consists of a switched 10BaseT Ethernet jack. Standard Ethernet charges vary depending on whether an organization is funded by campus or relies upon self-support.

Standard Ethernet One Time Charges (per outlet):

  State Funded Self Support
Activation $250 $50
Move $50 $50

Standard Ethernet Reoccurring Charges (per computer):

State Funded Self Support/M Square
$6/month $14/month
Additional IPs $6/month Additional IPs $6/month
** Additional IP requests should be initiated either through an NTS Work Request by the DTR/DDR or by e-mailing nts-service-desk@umd.edu. There is no one time charge for additional IP addresses. The monthly costs will increase by $5 per IP.

Server Connections:

Special fiber attached connections are available for network servers. Currently, 100BaseFX or Gigabit Ethernet connections to the core of the building network are available. Customers desiring this service should consult with Network Operations prior to ordering to discuss the suitability of this option for their application. Gigabit Ethernet connections are currently only available in the following buildings:
Art-Sociology, Computer and Space Science, Engineering Classroom, Lefrak, McKeldin, Physics, Plant Sciences, Tydings Hall and Van Munching.

Server Connections: One Time Charges (per connection)

Gigabit Server Installation $3000
100BaseFX Installation $1500
Upgrade from 100BaseFX to Gigabit $1500 (for 100Mb connections
over one year old)
Moving connection to a new location $440

Server Connections: Reoccurring Charges

First computer attached to jack $10/month
Additonal computers attached to jack $6/month each

Wireless LANs

NTS offers two types of wireless service, the open service (most popular) enables anyone to access the wireless network. The closed service can be configured to run off the building network, which can restrict access.

There is one option for wireless access points. This option is a Cisco 1200 AP which has a $910.00 one time charge - per access point. The one time charge includes the jack pull, access point, and antenna. There is no recurring charge for access points. A site visit can be performed (at no charge) to determine requirements regarding number and type of access points required. Please contact wireless@nts.umd.edu to arrange a site visit.

Off-Campus Office Connections:

University departments located in off-campus buildings within 2.5 miles of campus can obtain NTS supported network service. There are a number of caveats that must be considered:
  • The building wiring must have NTS supported wiring. It must meet NTS specifications and will typically be installed by an NTS approved contractor when the space is remodeled.
  • The off campus location must have a minimum of 12 activated network jacks.
  • Only TCP/IP traffic will be routed to remote locations. Protocols such as IPX and Appletalk are not supported over the connection back to the campus network.
  • 1-2 months of lead time are necessary as the connection to the campus network must be obtained from a telecommunications provider.
  • As remote buildings are not physically attached to the campus fiber network, the speed of the connection back to the campus network will be much slower than on campus connections. The typical connection is carried over a T-1 circuit at approximately 1.5Mbps.
The following costs are associated with this service:

  • The department must bear the cost of the T-1 circuit. Phone company T-1 charges are based upon distance, but $400/month is typical for our service radius.
  • There is a one-time $2500 charge for each T-1 installed to offset the cost of the equipment required to support the circuit.
  • There is a $75 monthly maintenance fee for each T-1 circuit.
  • One-time and recurring charges for the network jacks in the office are billed at the standard Ethernet rates listed at the top of this page with the exception that on-campus connections cannot be moved off-campus at the discounted rate.
Please note that the rates listed above apply only to locations within 2.5 miles of campus. Cost of services for locations outside of this area is determined on an individual basis.
Departments that are considering an off-campus connection should contact the Network Operations Center at 301-405-3003 to discuss their specific needs.
