Open Network Description

|

The Open Network service provides student, faculty and staff users with mobile computing devices easy access to the Campus Data network.

  • Open Network connections are very similar to standard Campus data network connections. They both use the same building jacks, cabling, equipment, etc. Ordering procedures and pricing are the same for both.

  • The difference in these services is the management of the data jacks. Machines on Campus Data network jacks are managed by individual departments whereas Open Network jacks are managed by automated systems run by OIT.
  • In order to use the Open Network service you must first register your machine:

    Faculty/Staff
Faculty and Staff should register their machines for the Campus Network DHCP roaming service. Either have your LAN admin register your machine via the DHCP roaming managment system, or use the DHCP Roaming quick registration system . Once your machine is registered for Campus Network DHCP roaming it can be used on any Campus Data network connection or any Open network connection.

    Residential Students
If you are a student living in a residence hall you should register your machine with the Residence Hall Network Service System. Once registered, your machine may be used on residence hall network connections or Open Network connections.

    Commuter Students
If you are a student not living in a campus residence hall you should register your machine with the Commuter Student Network registeration system. You will be able to use Open Network connections.

    • Additional Information

      • Once registered, your machine should be setup to use DHCP to obtain it's network configurations. Instructions are available here.

      • Open Network connections are intended for use by mobile/roaming individuals. Fixed location Computer lab machines should not be placed on Open Network connections at this time.
