The University of Maryland has been selected to provide one of three Next Generation Internet Exchanges (NGIX) for the federal research
networks. This exchange connects the national research labs in the
Greater Washington region to the University of Maryland over direct
fiber-optic links-- enabling joint research and development
partnerships. The exchange at the University covers the east coast
Mid-Atlantic region while the other two networks cover the west and
middle regions of the country. The following networks currently
participate in NGIX:
NASA NISN operational
NASA NREN research
DREN defense research
UCAID's Abilene research
MCI's vBNS research
National Library of Medicine
NGIX interfaces with the Mid-Atlantic Crossroads (MAX) which provides
high-performance connectivity services to universities and government
agencies in the Mid-Atlantic region.
