The Allocations and Advisory Committee (AAC) is composed of University
of Maryland faculty with significant experience in high performance computing
(HPC) and familiarity with the campus HPC Cluster (HPCC) managed by OIT.
Current HPCC AAC Membership:
- Elias Balaras (Mechanical Engineering)
- Jeff Klauda (Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering)
- Atif Memon (Computer Science)
- Philip Resnik (Linguistics)
- Derek Richardson (Astronomy)
- David McNabb (OIT)
The Allocations and Advisory Committee serves dual roles.
First, it provides oversight and develops policy on the deployment and
use of the HPCC itself.
Second, it solicits and reviews requests for allocations of compute time
on the HPCC, approving and prioritizing proposals based on the
appropriateness of the HPCC hardware for those computations,
estimated resources required,
track record of the requestors with previous HPCC requests and on other clusters,
experience of the researchers in HPC,
software requirements,
and merits of the research.
Different categories of allocations guarantee that cycles are available
to newcomers (development: 4K SUs), moderately demanding users
(small: 20K SUs), and heavy users (large: 60K SUs). The
intent is to give requests for development allocations rapid
turnaround, while large requests are approved at specific times. All
allocations cover specific four-month allocation periods, corresponding
roughly to the university's fall, spring, and summer semesters.
