OIT High Performance Computing Cluster (HPCC)

The High Performance Computing Cluster is a new campus computing resource managed and maintained by the Office of Information Technology (OIT). A Dell/EMC/UMD partnership provided the original eight node cluster and more than 1TB of storage, establishing a prototype central UM HPC facility. A group of faculty researchers worked with OIT to install, test, and tune the software and hardware components and develop operating policies and procedures. OIT upgraded the HPCC to 19 compute nodes (with a minimum 4GB RAM each) in early summer 2006. In early 2007, the Astronomy Department's Theory Group contributed 40 additional nodes and associated hardware comprising the first contribution to the HPCC through the newly established Independent Contributions Program (ICP.) Our second ICP contribution, provided by the Mechanical Engineering Department, consisted of 30 InfiniBand-based nodes and associated hardware. Since that time an additional 108 gigabit-Ethernet nodes have been contributed by three new ICP partners, and another 24 InfiniBand nodes were contributed by our sixth and latest ICP partner, bringing the total number of cores on the HPCC to well over 1050. Additional ICP contributions are now in progress.

With the establishment of the HPCC Allocations and Advisory Committee (AAC), this campus resource is now open for production use by campus researchers who require compute cycles for parallel codes and applications. If you are a University of Maryland researcher and would like to request an allocation of time on the HPCC, please use the online request form. If the applications you require are not already in the list of installed HPCC software, or there are other needs unique to your computing requirements, please point this out on your allocation request. We will look into options for accommodating your request.
