Accessing the Data Warehouse from Home

There are two options available for accessing the Data Warehouse from home if you have access to the Internet and you are currently an approved Data Warehouse user. The methodology is the same whether you want to use WOW or the Hyperion/Brio software from an on-campus office workstation or a home workstation.

If you do not currently have access to the Data Warehouse, you must apply for access. Details can be found on the Data Warehouse website.

Warehouse on the Web (WOW)

The only requirement for using WOW at home is access to a web browser such as Internet Explorer (recommended), Safari, Firefox, etc. There is no additional software that is needed to logon and use WOW. Accessing WOW is the same whether you are in your office on campus or at home, via the ARES web page and clicking on the Warehouse on the Web menu link to get to the WOW login page.

Hyperion/Brio "client" ad hoc query software

If you want to use the Hyperion/Brio software from home, there are several things you need to do:
    1. Make sure you have VPN software installed on your home workstation. You must establish a connection to the VPN software in order to successfully connect to the Data Warehouse when off-campus.
    2. Purchase a software license for your home workstation. The licensing for the Hyperion/Brio software is a per workstation license. This means that if you purchase one license, the software can only be installed on one machine. Therefore if you purchased one license and installed the software on your office workstation and you also want to install the software on your home workstation, you will need to purchase another license from OIT Software Licensing. If you still have the software CD you don't have to purchase another CD. You can use that same CD to install the software on your home workstation. Otherwise if you don't have the software CD, you can purchase it from OIT Software Licensing as well.
    3. Install the Oracle software on your workstation so that your machine can communicate to the Data warehouse database server. OIT-TSS Database Administration has a MS Word document that explains the download and Oracle 10g Client installation processes. You will also need to download and save the tnsnames.ora configuration file and save it in the appropriate folder as indicated on the last page in the document.
    4. Copy and save the correct Hyperion/Brio .OCE database connection file onto your home workstation as indicated on our website.

After you have installed the necessary pieces of software, to connect to the Data Warehouse from home, first log onto VPN with your Directory ID/password using the UMapps profile. After you are connected to VPN, you can then launch Hyperion and connect to the Data warehouse database.
