WAM Lab Instructional Facilty Guidelines

Academic and Distributed Services, formerly aITs, is pleased to announce the availability of IBM and Macintosh WAM Lab Instructional Facilities. Utilization of these facilities is limited to approved instruction and programs offered by the College Park Campus. The facilities are open to all UM Faculty and Staff on an equal basis.

LOCATION: Computer and Space Sciences Building, Rooms 3330 and 3332.

Room 3330: 21 networked IBM PS/2 50 (includes instructor's unit), Sony Projection System, Apple Laserwriter.

Room 3332: 21 networked PowerPC Macintoshes (includes instructor's unit), Sony Projection System, Apple Laserwriter.

Room 4352: 21 networked Sun machines (includes instructor's unit), Sony Projection System, Apple Laserwriter.

SOFTWARE: Full WAM Software Suite.

Includes the following core software:

  • Macintosh: MacWrite II, MacDraw II, MacPaint, Word Perfect, MicroEmacs, Systat/Sysgraph, Allegro Lisp, Textures, MatLab, Hypercard.

  • IBM: BASIC, Quattro Pro, Systat, Turbo Assembler, Turbo C, Turbo Debugger, Turbo Pascal, Word Perfect, Paradox, Windows.

  • Sun: Word Perfect, Mathematica, Maple, WriteNow, Diagram.

AVAILABILITY: Application will be taken on a first come, first serve basis with no less than one week notice, two weeks notice preferred. Reservations may be made up to 6 months in advance. Notifications of cancellations should be made as early as possible, preferable with a two weeks notice.

8:00 am - 9:00 pm, Monday - Thursday
8:00 am - 6:00 pm, Friday
12:00 noon - 6:00 pm, Saturday and Sunday

SCHEDULING:
TO APPLY FOR USE OF THESE FACILITIES, CALL THE INSTRUCTIONAL FACILITIES SCHEDULING NUMBER AT (301) 405-6740. Any non-instructional use will be reviewed for demonstrated need before being scheduled. Requested time will be reserved pending a decision.

INSTRUCTORS RESPONSIBILITIES:

    INSTRUCTIONAL PERSONNEL:
    These facilities may not be reserved without designation and provision of instructional staff. Instructor are requested to complete a short orientation prior to use of the facilities. Orientation Sessions will be scheduled and conducted by the Workstation Coordinator Office. Call 405-2952 to register.

    SOFTWARE:
    Provision, installation, and removal of course specific and demonstration software is the responsibility of the instructional staff. Legal issues are also the responsibility of the instructional staff. The Acceptable Use Guidelines will be made available for distribution to students.

    ADMINISTRATION:
    These facilities will be utilized for open WAM Lab service when not in use for classes. It is the instructional staff's responsibility to ask WAM user to leave before the time of the scheduled use.

    The procedures for requesting software to be added to the WAM Lab software suite is currently under review. Please contact Ellen Borkowski at or (301) 405-2922 for further information.

    HARDWARE AND NETWORK MAINTENANCE:
    Contact: Workstation Coordinator Office (301-405-2952 WSCOORD@umdd.umd.edu)
    Hardware will be maintained at a "best effort" level. Network communications capability to the campus TCP/IP network will be provided and maintained by the aITs Network Infrastructure Group. Down equipment and network problems should be reported immediately to the Workstation Coordinator Office.
