The Office of Information Technology is planning a two-part service interruption
to perform electrical work in the A.V. Williams Building on Saturday, March
19 and Saturday, March 26 between 12:01 a.m. and 8 a.m.
During each outage, computer systems--including OIT e-mail systems, PHR, WebCT,
Web Hosting and mainframe applications--will be unavailable. We will restore
services
as soon as possible after the outage and anticipate having all services back
online by 8 a.m. each Saturday.
The schedule for the outages is as follows:
Saturday, March 19
- 12:01 a.m.- 3 a.m.: power down all equipment; turn room over to Facilities
Management.
- 3 a.m.- 4 a.m.: shift from PEPCO on the Uninterrupted Power Supply (UPS)
feed to generated power.
- 4 a.m.- 8 a.m.: power-up hardware. Production systems online by 8 a.m.
During Spring Break week contractors will remove existing the UPS and batteries
and install new UPS and batteries.
Saturday, March 26
- 12:01 a.m.- 3 a.m.: power down all equipment; turn room over to Facilities
Management.
- 3 a.m.- 4 a.m.: shift from generated power back to PEPCO on the new UPS system.
- 4 a.m.- 8 a.m.: power-up hardware. Production systems online by 8 a.m.
Applications and services unavailable during the downtime include: ARES (PHR,
Electronic Forms, Data Warehouse), the athletic ticket server, CICS, ACCMAIL,
DEANS, Glue, the Mail@umd e-mail system, umail, WAM, CorporateTime, Digital
Imaging, the news service (source of newsgroups), Testudo, WebCT, and Web Hosting.
The Directory, because it has copies on servers in other buildings, will be
available during the outage. Departmental Glue services will still be up and
available, as will Glue
software. The university home page, www.umd.edu, will be hosted remotely and
will be available.
Additionally, an outage
of WebCT will extend from 12:01 a.m. on March 19 to 8 a.m. on March 21.
The purpose of the outage is to upgrade hardware and add server disk space.
The maintenance outage was scheduled for a time frame when demand for services
is low. Concerns about the interruption of specific services during this outage
should be addressed to the OIT Help Desk at 301.405.1500 as soon as possible.
