Discover New Ways to Enhance Student Learning Experiences at Upcoming Conference by Deborah Mateik OIT,
in cooperation with the Center for Teaching Excellence, will host the third annual
Innovations in Teaching and Learning (ITL) Conference. This conference showcases
and celebrates the creativity and dedication of University of Maryland instructors
who demonstrate excellence in their teaching endeavors. The conference attracts
an audience of not only Maryland faculty and teaching assistants, but also colleagues
from many regional and University System of Maryland institutions. More than 130
participants who attended the 2008 conference were exposed to topics such as "Using
Web 2.0 to Customize Instruction for the Millennial Generation," "Training TAs
to Lead Students to Conceptual Understanding," "Active Learning, Simulations,
and Virtual Teams," and "Extending Learning Beyond the Classroom with Social Media."
As we go to press, the 2009 ITL program committee is reviewing many exciting proposals
for presentations and poster sessions this year.
Featured presentations by two innovators in teaching and learning will highlight this year's conference. The morning (breakfast) keynote address will be provided by Julie Little, Interim Director of the EDUCAUSE Learning Initiative (ELI). She will discuss ELI's "Top Teaching and Learning Challenges" project and will solicit additional input into this topic from the faculty and staff who attend the conference. The luncheon keynote will be provided by Randy Bass, Executive Director of Georgetown's Center for New Designs in Learning and Scholarship (CNDLS). He will provide perspective on the integration of teaching practices, assessment techniques, instructional design, student learning, and technologies as enhanced by the latest educational environments. The ITL Conference is free to University of Maryland educators and instructional support staff. It will be held on Friday, April 24, 2009 from 8:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. at the Adele H. Stamp Student Union. Registration is required and runs from Monday, March 2 through Wednesday, April 22. Please visit the ITL Conference Web site at www.oit.umd.edu/itl.
