Digital Forensics Lab Opens for Business

by Gerry Sneeringer

OIT’s Digital Forensics Lab (DFL) was created through a partnership with the CyberWATCH consortium and funding from the National Science Foundation to provide instructors and students at consortium institutions with access to state-of-the-art computer forensics facilities. The laboratory was designed so that participants would be able to access the lab’s resources over the Internet from classrooms at their home institutions. The DFL will also provide instructional materials and training modules that instructors can utilize in their forensics courses.

A well attended kick-off celebration for the DFL was held in October at the Stamp Student Union, and the first instructors will be using the DFL in courses this spring.

DFL staff members are available to assist University of Maryland faculty and staff with their digital forensics needs. The DFL has already provided assistance to the Department of Public Safety and the Maryland Institute for Technology in the Humanities (MITH).
