Don't Take the Bait!
Despite university efforts, faculty and staff members remain a target for fraudulent e-mails requesting passwords, Social Security Numbers, bank account numbers, and other personal information. These “phishing” e-mail messages may adopt the logos, names, and even Web sites of legitimate organizations, making them difficult to detect. Full article

High-Tech Products at Low Prices!
OIT and the university have negotiated several technology discount programs that faculty, staff, and students can benefit from. Full article

Discount Program Success Results in Doubling of Donations
Successful sales during the past year by the Academic Computers for Terps (ACT) program and the Terrapin Technology Store (TTS) have resulted in a doubling of laptop donations to the university’s Office of Financial Aid. Full article

Network Refresh Update
The network and infrastructure upgrades to buildings funded with the fiscal year 2008 Network Refresh Advisory Committee (NRAC) allocations are underway. Full article

Blogging at Maryland
Blogging has quickly become one of the most prominent journaling tools in higher education today. It allows you to promote reflection, collaboration, peer review, and other forms of digital expression. OIT now has two blogging options available to faculty for use in their classes. Full article

VoIP Update
Over the past year, OIT has deployed Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) services in several campus buildings, including the Biosciences Research Building, the Jeong H. Kim Engineering Building, and Van Munching Hall. Full article

IT Service Management: Helping IT Services Run More Smoothly
OIT has begun implementation of an IT Service Management (ITSM) project based on the IT Infrastructure Library (ITIL). Full article

Kuali Update
Since last fall, the university’s Kuali group has been hard at work continuing its efforts with the consortium of universities developing new, state-of-the-art student and financial systems to be implemented by the member schools. Full article

Mobility Pilot
This fall, 133 University of Maryland freshmen in the Banneker/Key Scholarship and Maryland Incentive Awards programs are taking part in a pilot program to explore the academic usefulness of mobile technology as part of their university experience. They received their choice of either an iPhone or an iPod touch device during move-in on August 28 and 29. Full article

Faculty Leave Reporting
In July 2008, the new electronic Faculty Leave Reporting System became available to university faculty members. The new system is the result of a joint project between Administrative Affairs, Academic Affairs, and OIT to develop a new online process to record faculty leave accrual and usage. This new Faculty Leave Reporting System was incorporated into the current Payroll and Human Resources (PHR) system and provides the same PHR Time Entry functionality currently used by university staff.
