The New Terrapin Technology Store

The Office of Information Technology has established the new Terrapin Technology Store as a service to University of Maryland students, faculty, and staff, in order to offer high-tech equipment to the university community at favorable prices. The store offers Dell and Apple laptop and desktop computers through the university’s Academic Computers for Terps (ACT) program. These computers are for personal use and come with university software programs, on-campus support, warranties, and extended repair agreements. Some ACT models are on display in the store. Apple and Dell representatives will occasionally be on-hand to offer additional technology assistance, making the Terrapin Technology Store the perfect stop for anyone who isn’t comfortable with buying a computer – sight unseen – on the Internet. Other offerings available for personal use include several university-licensed software packages and additional Apple accessories like iPods. Cell phones offered through the university’s Cellular Discount Program are also on display in the store.

Institutional purchases for Apple equipment can also be made at the store. In fact, making these purchases at the store benefits both the ordering department and the university. First, you’ll receive an additional 2 percent in savings off of the bottom line price you would pay, even if the price is a special quote from Apple. This savings comes from the Terrapin Technology Store sharing its Apple reseller rebate with the purchasing department. Second, all profits from such sales will be funneled directly back into the university’s ACT program to hire staff for the OIT Student Help Desk, helping to provide quality IT services for every student at the university.

The Terrapin Technology Store is located on the ground floor of the Stamp Student Union. It is open Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. when classes are in session and at selected additional times dependent on campus events. For more information, please call 301.314.7000 or visit www.oit.umd.edu/techstore.
