VoIP Coming to Campus

Imagine being able to receive calls to your university phone number anywhere on campus or to see whether your colleague is available to answer your call, even before you dial. Envision sending and receiving video phone calls and checking your voice mail, e-mail, IM, and video calls from one interface. Sound like a pipe dream? Not so. All this will be possible when phone calls are routed over the Internet rather than through standard phone lines. The technology that can make it happen is called Voice over Internet Protocol, or VoIP. Right now, the university is taking the first steps toward these conveniences and is in the process of selecting a university-wide VoIP system that will eventually replace the entire traditional phone system on campus. Stay tuned for updates!
