OIT Help Desk Tips

• When a spam (or junk) e-mail message says at the bottom “click here to be removed from our list,” DON’T click it and DON’T reply. Spammers use the reply to verify that your e-mail address is active and being read, so they will in turn continue to sell your e-mail address and sign you up for more spam messages.

• If you see a pop-up ad saying “Your IP Address is being broadcast across the Internet! With this information someone could attack your computer!” just close it. It’s an advertisement in disguise, attempting to get you to purchase the company’s software.

• To request a change in telephone or voice mail services, or to have your phone moved or disconnected, contact your Departmental Telecommunications Representative (DTR). If you don’t know who your DTR is, visit www.oit.umd.edu/nts/voicesys/faculty/dtr.html to find out.
