Student Technology Fee Advisory Committee by Ellen BorkowskiThe Board of Regents of the University System of Maryland has endorsed the concept of student technology fees as a way of funding badly needed investments in technology that will directly impact the quality and relevance of students’ educational experiences. The Board of Regents approved the implementation of a Technology Fee for the College Park campus starting with the FY’03 academic year. For this academic year (Fall 2002 – Spring 2003), full-time and part-time undergraduate students are paying respectively a $50 and a $25 Technology Fee. This fee will rise to $100 for full-time and $50 for part-time undergraduate students starting next academic year (Fall 2003 – Spring 2004). How will this money be spent? A Student Technology Fee Advisory Committee has been formed that will provide recommendations to the Senior Vice President of Academic Affairs and Provost and the Vice President and Chief Information Officer on the allocation of the funds. The committee consists of seven undergraduate students and two faculty members. The undergraduates represent different colleges on campus, in addition to being both residential and commuter students. Two of the students are also members of SGA. A first round of calls for proposals has been completed and the committee has reviewed the 13 proposals submitted. A second call for proposals is currently underway. For more information, visit www.oit.umd.edu/techfee.
