Common Login Gains Options

by Steve Edwards

The Common Login for applications that are associated with the Administrative Resource Enterprise Services (ARES) umbrella Web page has been changed to include two login options. Before this change was made, users were required to enter their University of Maryland Identification (UMID), which was usually the Social Security Number, and a personal identification number (PIN). With the change in the common login, users may choose to use either the UMID and PIN or their University Directory ID and Directory Password. Web systems affected by this change include FRSWEB, ELF, Purchasing and Travel Card Reallocation, and PHR (including Electronic Time Entry).

Since the UMID traditionally uses Social Security Numbers, this method of login will ultimately be phased out and replaced with the Directory ID and Directory Password combination. This will be more secure and will help simplify the login process since the Directory ID and Directory Password combination is also used when authenticating to the CorporateTime calendar system, the WebCT system, and various other University systems.

To determine your Directory ID or to set your Directory Password visit www.directory.umd.edu.

Individuals using the Common Login who do not currently have a Directory entry (for example, non-College Park employees) should continue to use the UMID/PIN login combination.
