E-mail System Update

In February, approximately 300 OIT staff members migrated to the new Mail@umd e-mail system. Since that time, various technical quirks have been identified and resolved. This summer and fall all incoming students received Mail@umd e-mail system accounts. New faculty and staff members are receiving Mail@umd accounts as well.

Benefits of the new Mail@umd e-mail system include faster processing speed than current university e-mail servers, server-side virus protection, access to e-mail using PDAs and other handheld devices, and the ability to access e-mail accounts from anywhere via the Web.

“I have enjoyed being a beta tester for the new e-mail system, and have been pleased with the way OIT has responded to the inevitable bugs,” said Victor Korenman, Professor and Associate Provost. “The system acts with my Netscape e-mail client as my old system did, but is much more efficient. An extra bonus is that the new system can also be accessed through any Web browser, from anywhere, and the interface is really friendly and easy to use.”

OIT has created Mail@umd E-mail Migration Teams to assist local migration teams in each of the departments and colleges as they migrate their faculty and staff members to the new system. Most members of the university community who have e-mail accounts on OIT servers such as WAM, Glue, DEANS, ACCMAIL, and umail will migrate to their new Mail@umd e-mail accounts beginning this academic year. Several units have already migrated or are in the process of migrating to the new system. As of September 7, there were over 1,000 faculty and staff members and nearly 6,100 students with active Mail@umd e-mail system accounts.

More information about the Mail@umd e-mail system can be found at www.oit.umd.edu/email.
