Usenet Server Consolidation

by Diane Donaldson

This past semester the University’s two Usenet news servers were consolidated onto one new server. The new server provides more efficient service to users, and it stores accumulated messages for a longer time.

The new server is called news2.wam.umd.edu. After a transition period, the old servers—news.wam.umd.edu and news.umd.edu (a.k.a. news.glue.umd.edu)—will be turned off, and the new server will inherit these addresses.

Current news users will notice that their article counts are different after moving to the new server because the new server has different groups and article numbers than the old servers, but this will not affect performance.
