IT Counts: Got Connections?

Joseph Mitchell, Assistant Director for Resident Life, provided information on the 8,450 or 94% of all residents who have registered their data jacks for the Fall 2001 semester. (These data include South Campus Commons but not University Courtyard residents.)

Differences in data jack registration are small between men & women and different classes:

Men 95%

Women 93%

Freshmen 93%

Sophomores 96%

Juniors 96%

Seniors 93%

Other 56%

However, there is wide variation among different resident populations. Students in College Park Scholars and Honors are among the most connected populations in the residence halls: 97% of each group – over 3700 students – have active data jacks. Although the number of students is small, 90% of the 180 residents of the Language and International House have active jacks; however, these students have computer labs in their programs. Only 51% of the 35 Foreign Exchange residents are connected.

How do we compare nationally?…Very well, thanks! The following shows the percentage of residents who are connected to their campus networks at peer and aspirational institutions.
