Use ARES to Update Personal
Information in University Databases A variety of services are available through the administrative services web page known informally as ARES. The Administrative Resource Enterprise Services (ARES) page, http://www.ares.umd.edu, is a one-stop shop for many faculty, research, and administrative services. While there are restrictions to parts of ARES, all employees have a login (UMID) and PIN, which grant access to their personal record. This record includes demographic data such as addresses, leave balances, and salary and appointment information. Some of this information, such as email addresses, can be updated directly by employees. Of course, access is restricted to your individual record. Accessing your personal information is easy. From within your browser:
You may need to obtain an electronic "certificate" for your browser before proceeding. Certificates encrypt and authenticate services across the network to ensure that only members of the University of Maryland community are using the services. If you need a certificate, ARES will take you through the few simple steps necessary to obtain it. The Personal Services area contains other helpful university information such as a university phone directory and a university map. You do not need to log in to access these. Sample timesheets will be added to help familiarize the university community with electronic timesheets. These are for practice only (no data is stored). They provide a shell of the electronic one that will be introduced later this year and a mechanism to experience "going to the web" to submit timesheets. All staff will be required to use an electronic timesheet when the new Payroll/Human Resource (PHR) system goes live. PHR will be implemented in phases; the first will begin in July and conclude in December of this year and will include the electronic timesheet. Once you log into ARES, you remain logged in until you log out (by clicking on Logout) or exit your browser. For security reasons it is recommended that you perform one of these functions before leaving your workstation unattended. Some of the more sensitive ARES applications will timeout your login after a specified period of inactivity. Also for security reasons, when you first log in you will be required to change your PIN, and it is recommended that you do this periodically. To change your PIN, select PinChange under Personal Services. Your new PIN must be exactly six alphanumeric characters. Key in your UMID, old PIN, and new PIN in the appropriate boxes, then click on the Change PIN button. Notice that you must key your new PIN twice. While developed and maintained by OIT, the ARES web site is the collaborative effort of many university units and will continue to expand as additional services are made accessible via the Web. We encourage you to explore ARES. Open a New Window to Rate This Article
