WebCT@Maryland upgraded to WebCT 3

By Ellen Borkowski

The WebCT@Maryland server (http://www.courses.umd.edu) was upgraded this past Summer to WebCT 3.6 Campus Edition. This upgrade provides some key backend upgrades to provide better performance to the university. In addition, this version of WebCT is compliant with American Disabilities Act Section 508, enabling people with disabilities to fully utilize the software using assistive technologies. The calendar has been enhanced to provide a centralized calendar that enables students and instructors to view a single calendar with information for all their WebCT courses. Users have also been given the capability of downloading the calendar into their Palm or other PDA if it uses the Palm OS.

WebCT can be used to create entire courses online or to complement a classroom-based course. It provides an online environment that instructors can use to (a) provide course materials that include text, images, video, and audio; (b) evaluate students with quizzes and assignments; (c) facilitate learning using searchable indexes, glossaries, and image databases; (d) integrate web resources into your courses; (e) create opportunities for students to be knowledge builders; (f) communicate with students via discussions, email, real-time chat sessions, and an interactive whiteboard; (g) manage grades; (h) supply student feedback via an online grade book, self tests, and progress tracking; and (i) obtain data to analyze the effectiveness of the course.

Sessions that provide an overview of WebCT and its functionality can be scheduled for departments by contacting Ellen Borkowski at 301.405.2922 or ey9@umail.umd.edu. You may also visit http://www.oit.umd.edu/IIT for a list of scheduled sessions.
