VPL Assists College Park Scholars to Develop Professional Quality Graphic Presentations
By David McNabb
Forty students in their fourth semester practicum of "Earth, Life, and
Time" (ELT), one of the 12 College Park Scholars (CPS) Programs, designed
and
produced posters for display at Undergraduate Research Day and the 2001
CPS Academic Showcase. In stark contrast to the traditional cut and
paste, hand-lettered, trifold posters appearing at previous events, the
high-quality wide-format prints were displayed with great effect, not only
in conveying the depth and details of the student projects but confirming
ELT's commitment to produce fully computer literate students who are able
to
utilize the latest computer technologies for communicating research
results. Working with the Office of Information Technology's Visualization and Presentation Lab (VPL), students learned the complexities of digitally composed poster design and production. "We were not only pleased with the general quality of the displays,"
said J. Merck, the Associate Director of ELT, "but by the degree to which many students' creative abilities seemed to have been liberated by access to professional quality design facilities." During the Fall 2001 semester, 40-50 sophomores in the ELT
program will create small-scale proof-of-concept poster projects in
preparation for a repeat of the large-scale project in Spring 2002. Discussions are underway with directors of the other 11 CPS programs who may be interested in giving their students similar assignments as well as other opportunities for teaching and research collaboration between the VPL and CPS.
