Administrative Support

There is an administrative side to every faculty member’s life. Student rosters must be accessed and grades posted, schedules must be kept, voice and electronic mail must be retrieved and managed, networked communications must be established, and the policies for safe and secure computing must be understood and followed. OIT supports many of the technologies that make keeping up with these administrative tasks easier.

Administrative Systems

  • Calendar Software (Oracle Calendar/CorporateTime) - This calendaring system enables you to maintain your scheduling information on a central server that can be accessed and managed from your office, home, or palmtop device.
  • Administrative Resource Enterprise Services (ARES) - This centralized connection to Web-based systems allows you to update your personnel information, view financial reports (FRS), access purchasing information, complete your electronic timesheet, and perform a wide variety of other administrative functions.

Computer Accounts

  • Directory Services - All faculty, staff, and students have records in the University Directory, which contain the standard office and telephone contact information, username, and password information. Enterprise services (such as ELMS, Oracle Calendar, PHR, and ARES) are increasingly being integrated with the University Directory.
  • Glue/WAM (Workstations at Maryland) - These UNIX shell accounts provide 100MB disk space to support Web hosting and FTP access.
  • DEANS Account - This UNIX shell account has a full suite of Internet accessible tools such as mail, news, telnet, ftp, and Web browsers. It also provides access to the ADVISE system.
  • MVS Account - Faculty who need access to Student Information System (SIS) must do so with an MVS account..
  • Print Account - Faculty and students must set up a special funded account in order to do laser printing in WAM labs and other labs on campus.
  • GRACE Account - A subset of the Glue system, the UNIX-based GRACE environment is designed for researchers and students in specific classes to use for their work. Only those IDs which have been specifically authorized are allowed to login, so there is less competition for the system resources.
  • OTAL Server Account - An account on OTAL enable faculty to publish instructional and research pages on the Web server and to provide their students with an experimental space for course-related Web development.
  • Webhosting - This fee-based service enables departments and programs to establish and maintain fully functional Web sites with their own domain name, a stock set of cgi programs, and automated log analysis.

The products include operating systems, virus protection products, and other educational and productivity software for PC, Macintosh, and UNIX systems.
  • Computer Labs - More than 30 Open Workstation Labs are available for faculty, staff, and students.

Communications

    Networking
  • Connecting to the Network - There are a number of ways to connect to the Internet at the University of Maryland, including wireless, Ethernet, dialup, and VPN (Virtual Private Networking).
  • DHCP Roaming - This service allows laptops and other mobile devices to access the Internet and the university network from different buildings.
  • Off Campus Dial-up Networking - A modem pool provides free access to the university network and Internet from remote locations. This service will be discontinued June 30, 2007.
  • Wireless Network - Wireless access to the Internet and university network is ubiquitous from university classrooms.
  • Virtual Private Network (VPN) - This service provides an encrypted and secure connection "tunnel" path from a user's machine to its destination through the Internet.

    Voice and Video

  • Voice Mail - All university telephones are equipped with a 24-hour universally accessible voice messaging service. It will answer telephone calls and allow callers to leave messages.

Guidelines and Policies

  • Policy for Acceptable Use of Information Technology Resources - This policy sets forth standards for responsible and acceptable use of university information technology (IT) resources, including computer systems, computer labs, applications, networks, software, and files.
  • NEThics - The staff of Project NEThics respond to complaints of misuse that involve resources administered by OIT and are available to provide education and resources on issues of legal and ethical use of computers for members of the university community.
