The University of Maryland Data Warehouse can be accessed from a desktop computer (Windows-based, Macintosh, or UNIX-based) via an Internet connection. Data can be viewed with query tool software (i.e. Brio Intelligence Explorer), web browser or exported into other software such as Quattro Pro, Excel, or WordPerfect.
The following information is covered below:
Who can access the University of Maryland Data Warehouse?
Authorized University of Maryland, College Park, business managers, administrators, service providers and institutional researchers can access the data warehouse. Authorization is granted through approval by the employee's unit head as well as the appropriate data manager(s) via the University of Maryland Data Warehouse Account Request form.
Data Warehouse Access & Security
Access is assigned to the data warehouse based on a person's needs in his/her unit as authorized by the unit head. In addition, data are also secured by unit, college and division. Depending on their function and authorization, users have access to some or all of the data for a defined data subset. In general, a departmental user may only have access to his/her own data (department, college, or division as appropriate), similar to viewing of transaction system data.
After authorization is granted through approval by the employee's unit head as well as the appropriate data manager(s), a data warehouse user is issued a User ID and password. User Ids and passwords belong to the original requestor and must not be shared with another individual. As acknowledged by their signature on the University of Maryland Data Warehouse Account Request form, data warehouse users agree that access to the University of Maryland Data Warehouse shall only be for the purpose of authorized University business. Users are responsible for the use of information to which they have access and will share this information with others only as required by their assigned duties. Unauthorized activity, such as using information for personal monetary gain, providing resources to unauthorized persons, or conducting illegal activities, may result in disciplinary action, dismissal from their jobs and/or prosecution under the scope of applicable laws.
How do I Apply for Access?
Access the UM Data Warehouse Account Request Form on-line, complete the information on page 1 and print the three page form. Sign page 3, obtain approval for unit access from your unit head on page 2 and mail the three page form to Office of Data Administration, Room 1103 Reckord Armory.
Upon approval by the Data Stewards/Managers, a User Id will be established by OIT/ODA and the requestor will get an e-mail notification.
Requirements for Data Subset Access
Access to data subsets will be activated for each data subset when data training for that subset has been completed.
University Guidelines
All UM Data Warehouse users are required to adhere to the
University of Maryland Policy on the Acceptable Use of Information Technology Resources. When applying for UM Data Warehouse access, users must also sign a Statement of Understanding attesting to the appropriate use of their Data Warehouse account.
Data Training
UM Data Warehouse policies and procedures are based upon the requirement that all data warehouse users must receive data training for the data subset(s) to which they are to be given access. Data training is provided by the Data Manager responsible for the specific Data Subset. Upon receiving authorization for access to a Data Subset, users will be invited to the appropriate Data Training sessions. Users who do not comply with this policy will not be granted access to the affected data subsets.
