ABOUT EAST

The Freeman foundation has provided a rare opportunity to this campus by supporting an initiative to introduce East Asian themes into University of Maryland courses in science and engineering. The result of such an opportunity has been the emergence of a group of faculty on our campus that is called EAST (short for "East Asian Science and Technology"). EAST has adopted the following mission statement:

"Science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) is increasingly global, and this global component is habitually missing in undergraduate courses in the United States. EAST is dedicated to the introduction of East Asian themes into undergraduate STEM courses and culture on the University of Maryland campus."

Since its inception in the spring of 2003, EAST has had summer workshops in 2003 and 2004 for its members, and monthly seminars during the academic year 2003-2004, as its members have worked together to produce modules and new courses incorporating East Asian themes.
